Movies with high age limits at school

29.10.2009

Question:

At our children’s school the teachers use movies in the teaching without paying attention to the age limits on them. We have several times discussed this with the principal, but we are always told that age limits are only guidelines, and that the teachers have assessed the material and decided it’s suitable.

From outraged parents.

Answer from Kids and Media’s advisor:

Thank you for your question. Looking at the list of movies you’ve enclosed (not repeated here), there is good reason to react against the policies at this school. All movies are marked with an age limit, and when children are younger than this age limit it should be the parents decision whether or not to let their children watch them. The school board has a great responsibility for what is being communicated to children, and this responsibility they should take seriously.
