My child would like to create a home page at Piczo

29.10.2009

Question:

I have a ten year old son who wants to create a web page at Piczo. I wonder if it´s a good idea to have a home page at Piczo or other pages like this.

Answer from Kids and Media’s advisor:

It´s easy to make home pages at www.piczo.com, and that´s why we see that many children do it, even down to primary school level. Even so the advice at Piczo´s pages is that users should be at least 13 years of age, and they encourage you “to get permission from your parent or guardian” if you´re between the ages of 13 and 17.

Taken from the web page:
"Piczo requires that all users be at least 13 years of age. Although Piczo does not require parental permission for teens using its service, depending on the nature of any customer service inquiries, the Piczo Staff may require some teenagers to get parents' permission in order to continue the service."

I know that many children register as older than they actually are, but Piczo has a reason for putting the age limit at 13. Much of the reason for the 13 year age limit is probably that there is a lot of responsibility involved in being a web page editor.

We know that there are a lot of children and young people who don´t know what sort of information and pictures of themselves and others are wise to publish, and that some also let their home page/guest book become sites for inappropriate messages about others. Therefore, even if you´re 13 you should have basic information and training before being allowed to create a home page.

At the bottom of Piczo´s web pages there is important parental information.

Good luck :-)
