StreetDance 3D
01.07.2010
This film is not much more than a filmed dance contest. But what does that matter, when the dancing and music is so good that you feel like making some dance moves as you leave the cinema?
Plot
StreetDance 3D does not have much of a plot, nor does it have interesting dialogue or innovative themes. In short, the story is about a street dance team that is practicing for the Street Dance Championships. Just before the finals the leader of the team leaves in huff, and the team is left without direction, and more importantly: without a gym. An opportunity presents itself when they are offered to loan facilities at The Royal Dance School, on the condition that five ballet dancers are allowed to join the team.
Herein lies the conflict that drives the film; how can ballet dancers and street dancers find a common artistic expression, when they are on a collision course both in terms of form and technique, as well as part of very different sub cultures? A solution is put forward by Helena (Charlotte Rampling), a dance teacher who points out that dance is dance, independent of form. The important thing is to find a unique style instead of just copying others.
Quality and Theme
It is possible that the 3D-effects could have been used better. It is also possible that the dialogue could have been more original, and that the characters could have developed more throughout the story. However, one of the main points of the film is to show how ballet dancers and street dancers can learn how to express their true feelings through dance, and this works very well. The plot and the dialogue are in many ways only necessary in order to create a framework surrounding the dance and the music.
The music in the film is excellent. The mixture of hip hop, pop and classical music, the Harry Potter theme halfway through the film; it all lends itself to the the film having a great atmosphere. Add a number of street dancers from Britain’s Got Talent, several impressive dancing scenes, some romance and an amazing final sequence and know that StreetDance 3D will definitely make an impression and will leave people wondering if they are still able to somersault.
Suitability/Conclusion
StreetDance 3D has a PG rating, and can safely be seen by children from 6 years of age. However, parents should be aware that there are some scenes containing mild violence and sexual references.
