My son plays too much

29.04.2010

Question:

My son plays video games all afternoon and spends no time with friends. Do you have any advice on how to make him play less?

Answer from Kids and Media’s Director:

I want to encourage you as parents to have a dialogue with your son regarding time spent on playing video games, and encourage him to share his thoughts and how he experiences his own social situation. Video games, chat/social media, films and school work are the most common activities among teenage boys. What does your son like to do? What does he think about his own social life? Does he miss having friends in the real world? Are there any spare time activities in your area that might suit your son’s interests or skills?

Here are some symptoms of game addiction - the more of these symptoms you can identify, the greater the need to get professional help:

  • Most non-school hours are spent on the computer or playing video games.
  • Plays at night, sleeps during the day.
  • Shirking school, or falling asleep in class.
  • Falling behind with assignments and homework.
  • Worsening grades.
  • Lying about computer or video game use.
  • Choosing to use the computer or play video games, rather than see friends.
  • No exercise.
  • Dropping out of other social groups (clubs or sports).
  • Gets restless and annoyed when not allowed to play video games or surf the net.
  • Tries to quit, but can’t.

There also are physical symptoms that may point to addiction:

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome.
  • Sleep disturbances.
  • Backaches or neck aches.
  • Headaches.
  • Dry eyes.
  • Failure to eat regularly or neglecting personal hygiene.

If you aren’t making progress by talking about this, I recommend you to consult your school counsellor, school nurse or other resource people where you live.

I think many parents recognise your predicament.
