The Twilight Saga: New Moon
19.11.2009
It´s time for a new chapter in the Twilight-saga, and this time a broken heart causes the drama. This is the autumn’s movie hit for teenage girls, and they most likely won’t leave the cinemas disappointed.
Plot
Bella lives in a small town called Forks, Washington state, USA. In the first chapter of the Twilight saga she met Edward, a mysterious boy who turns out to be part of an old family of vampires. When this movie starts Bella and Edward are happily in love, and about to celebrate Bella’s 18th birthday. But in the middle of the celebration Bella starts to bleed. One of the vampires can´t resist the scent of human blood and attacks her.
This incident makes Edward realise that Bella will never be safe as long as he and the other vampires remain in Forks. He decides the family should leave town and breaks it off with Bella. This brings Bella into a deep and desperate depression, and only when she develops a friendship with Jacob Black does she regain her spark and improve her mood. But the memory of Edward is never far from her mind, and she never gets over her true love.
After a while this causes trouble because Jacob is in love with Bella, and her feelings for him become stronger and stronger. But Jacob also hides a big secret, and what will Edward do when he hears that Bella is dead?
Quality and Theme
The Twilight Saga has become a worldwide phenomenon, and the four books and first movie in the series have achieved great success. The actors in this movie were greeted by hordes of fans at the premiere party in London last week, and this gives an indication of expectations prior to the premiere. But if any fans are worried, you won’t be disappointed. This is a skilfully produced movie that portrays the book’s plot well, and we gain good insight into Bella’s personal problems and the drama which follows after Edward and the vampire family leave the small town.
The movie will very likely reach its target audience, but at the same time it must be said that it’s far from top quality. You should probably have seen the first movie or read the books to get the full potential out of it. In addition, there is maybe a few too many emotional discussions, and surprisingly little action. This results in the movie at times becoming similar to the many teenage dramas on TV.
The theme of the movie is inspired by “Romeo and Juliet”, which is also pointed out during the film. It´s all about true love and what it can do to you, for better and for worse. Bella is completely shattered when Edward leaves her, and even though she develops a close relationship to Jacob, he will never be able to replace her feelings for Edward. This causes inner turmoil in Bella – she needs Jacob, but she can’t return his love. A theme like this naturally draws young people, and the insight the movie gives into Bella’s love problems can help youth tackle their own challenges.
Suitability
This movie has received a 12A age limit, and there are several scary scenes which means that no children under this age should be allowed to see it. There is an underlying dark mood, and at one point we see a head being separated from its body.
Conclusion
For young people, and especially girls between thirteen and eighteen years of age, this is a movie specially tailored to their age group. It will probably become as popular as its predecessor.
